Julia's Maternity

Julia is one of my oldest and best friends. We started hanging out when we were 14, almost 22 years ago! Our lives have followed similar paths even when we didn't live in the same state. And now I get to share her pregnancy with her. At 33 weeks she is a beaming, glowing, beautiful mom to be and I couldn't be more proud to document the new arrival of her baby girl. I can not wait to meet her!

First all... new blog back to the old blog. I decided to come back to this blog rather than the type pad blog. I let the services expire... blah blah... so here we are! SGP is undergoing a major face lift for the new spring season so if you see some inconsistencies in the site, that would be why. This weekend we will be installing our new image galleries! Be sure to check our Modern Boudoir as well, our new boudoir site!

The next few weeks are bellies and boudoir... you can tell spring is in the air. Today's belly session was my first in our new home studio and I love the results. I'm looking forward to this seasons sessions!

Camden Wedding!

This weekend was hot, steamy humid, and to top it off there was a dramatic thunderstorm! Kitty and Joe tied the knot in Camden Maine at the Camden Yacht Club right on the water... boats and mountains in the background, doesn't get much better than that! It was our first wedding in Camden and it was so great to shoot in several different locations, The Hartstone Inn, Church, and the Yacht Club.
At the beginning of the day it was outrageously hot... like a steam bath. We kept the bride cool with wet towels during photos, but she held up beautifully! I don't think I have sweat that much in a decade! As we walked over to the church for family portraits it started pouring... but the bride and groom decided to walk to the church in the rain from the inn with their big umbrellas, enjoying a moment alone. By the time we got everyone settled, the sky opened back up, with cooler temps I might add, and we were able to take photos outside the beautiful church.
We were not allowed inside the church for thr ceremony (no cameras or flash) so we waited in our air conditioned car while we unloaded all the photos onto my laptop.
A bagpiper led the procession from the church to the yacht club down the quaint streets of Camden. The sun cast a warm glow on the rest of the evening, making it a picture perfect day!

TTD

Well if you are going to Trash The Dress then you might as well do it right. As so many wedding photographers know, the wedding day is never "perfect" light, or "perfect" temperatures...so today for our TTD session we thought we would make sure that we got PERFECT everything.
So when is the best time to shoot? Either sunset or sunrise and since today called for some clouds later in the day (and we had a meeting with a potential bride and groom) we decided to go for sunrise... and anyone who knows me, knows that sunrise is NOT my thing. But our bride was up for it and we wanted it so bad, well that just made me giddy so up at 6 am for hair and makeup and out the door by 7!
First we hit an industrial alley in downtown and took over the street, awesome time a day for it! And with yesterday's heat... well it was the best time to shoot for sure. The sky had a great haze to it that just added to the photos.
After that we headed over to the beach, all amped up because what we had shot so far was looking pretty good!
Kayla was willing to do anything in that dress and she just about did. The early birds at the beach must have thought we were crazy! After all, not too many TTD going on here in Maine so far. She was hit by pounding surf, went out into the waves, and crawled in the sand. And we followed, cameras held high in the surf...

Seniors are SO COOL

Caitlyn was such a blast and totally adventurous...climbing rocks and making me work for it. She looked like she was floating over the water. It was awesome!

Apple orchards, woodchucks as witnesses, perfect weather, great band... all the ingredients for a perfect wedding.
One thing I noticed from the minute we arrived at to get Lindy ready was the love... you could feel it... in the air, in Lindy's voice and even more so in their eyes when she approached him down the aisle. I know I had a hard time holding back the tears. This was one wedding where I was choked up from the get go!
Tim and Melinda tied the knot last weekend at Gilsland Farms in Falmouth Maine. This location is perfect for an outdoor wedding... the grounds are gorgeous, long grasses, pretty views of the water and scurrying woodchucks every place you look!

Oh my summer truly is the time to shoot. Weddings, seniors, models, pageants, and families shoots on the beach. We have it all almost every day of the week until October. It's great fun and I can't complain because I am doing what I love love love o do! Come December I will be wishing it was August again (even though I am slightly exhausted by the heat and humidity).

But the light is amazing and the days are still long... so book while you can! Beaches are great this time of year but we took tonights shoot inside and worked on some studio lighting... more of that to come.
Last night I was lucky enough to shoot with a super cool couple on the streets and alley ways of the Old Port. Great colors an a super fun couple too!

So much more to come in the next week! Lots of good wedding images too! Wish we could share but I have to let the bride and grooms get their sneak peak first!

Another engagement shoot to post tomorrow night too!

Are not like working... I feel like I am cheating. These images may actually speak for themselves. Its hard to find a location in Maine that I don't like... or any New England town for that matter, but this one is a gem... and pretty well hidden :)
I'm always looking for private (but public of course) beaches and textures walls with pops of color.
The heat gave us a break long enough to do a great shoot... but it will be back next week we've been told. Just in time for the senior shoots! It's better that way, the beach is always better when it's warm out. Nobody likes to get in the water when it's cold right?

Getting in as much test shooting as we can before August when senior portraits, weddings, and family beach shoots happen all at once :) Today we worked with Liv, a wonderful model (she's just 16 but by god the girl knows what she is doing) who certainly has a great future ahead of her. She drove 6 hours with her dad from CT and back all in one day just for us to shoot her. Her portfolio is full now! We each shot about 5 gigs (at least 900 photos) in about 2 hours! 6 clothing changes, 3 hair changes and countless poses later... it was an amazing shoot.
Here's to you future success Liv! You have a great future in modeling should you choose to go with it!

Great model and a great sport sitting in the grass getting bit by the skeeters. Nothing like a summer night near the water in Maine! I hope she is happy with the results! I know we were!

There is nothing like a warm sunset for engagement sessions on the beach in New England. Last night's weather was perfect.. great clouds, great light. But in New England no matter what time of year we can have some amazing drama in the sky. Its either raining, windy, sunny... doesn't matter... even snow can make for an amazing backdrop. As far as I am concerned you have to embrace the weather here... work with what you have... if its raining... go moody... if its sunny... go beachy. We try not to let the weather bring us down... because you have to work with what you have.
But last night was my favorite kinda night :)

Sometimes our bodies make us stop cold. It happened to me last year when I had several surgeries to remove the cancer from my body... and now this year because I somehow caught pneumonia. It started with a simple virus... just a cold that I actually thought was allergies. Went to the doctor and found out it was a number of things!
1. sinus infection
2. ear infection
3. pneumonia in my right lung
4. bronchitis
All at once! The doc said I "couldn't be much sicker". So a week later and a bottle of antibiotics and I am starting to finally feel better. I finally got my voice back... I thought I would sound like Scarlett Johansen forever... which I wouldn't mind so much :)
But I haven't posted in so long so I thought I would explain why.
So I guess the lesson (one I should know by heart by now) is to listen to your body and take a break from the world when you need it. Sleep in once in a while, drink lots of OJ during flu season. And most of all... LISTEN to your intuition and your inner you :)

Today was such a sad day for our country and our young people that I don't feel like posting but it's been so long... and maybe the words will make me feel better.

On a day like today you hear yourself ask the questions over and over again "why? how does this happen... how does life get so bad for an individual that they have no other option but to pull a gun on another human being?"

The utter sadness is enough to make me put my head under a pillow. But instead I will tell my son I love him, that I am proud of him and that he too should be proud of the person he is. I believe that barring mental illness, it begins with love. If we are not loved we don't learn to love ourselves, we do not learn how to love others. The pain and despair these people feel and lead them to these completely irrationally choices... could it have been avoided?

Yesterday, just yesterday I was saying to a friend that I believe the universe sometimes comes together to create something that is meant to be (like my son being born, like my birth). But today I have to again question why things like this happen. It simply isn't possible that there is a bigger picture in this situation. Is there? What good will come of this? Ask the parents of these students... the girlfriends, fiances, boyfriends, sisters and brothers... where is the light at the end of their tunnel?

I have not felt this way since Sept 11. The helplessness, the utter despair of what has happened. Blame will be passed back and forth... everyone but the shooter will be blamed. Blame the administration, gun control, the school... the staff... but the simple fact is that you don't SHOOT PEOPLE. We want to believe that we are all good inside, on a daily basis... you just don't see this happening. Do you?

The event will be covered 24 hours a day for the next 7 days or more... and we will inevitably be desensitized to what happened... like Columbine and everything that followed. Because the human brain can not take so much pain... we can not process what we see. We can only hold the sadness for so long.

So tomorrow turn off CNN and kiss your children and tell them you love them and that they are GOOD and beautiful. That they are worth the world, that they are special, that they are something...that they are everything. Do not belittle, do not expect more than they can give, do not tear them down. Love them and everything else will be ok.

I learned this week for my birthday that my son is a photographer... he's 11... and I'm serious. He took photos of me for my birthday and he did an AMAZING job. I guess he has been paying attention. The best part is that he likes it! I have to get this boy a real camera one of these days. Composition... focus... he did such a great job. Thanks Thomas!

I haven't blogged in over 10 days! Bad bad... but I have been busy and I have been shooting :)
I had the pleasure of visiting friends in PA last week and this week I was schedule to travel to San Diego but because of some constraints beyond my control... it was postponed. But its ok because there is plenty o' editing to be done!

I feel like a slacker... I hadn't even posted my latest baby, twin and maternity shoot to flickr! But that trip to PA was such a blast and inspiring to be around so many creative people. Great friends were made in a short time. Flickr is such a cool place and I have made so many really amazing friends... being on a site with like minded people with the same passion is like swimming in a pool of ready made soul mates. But now I spend much too much time collaborating and chatting into the wee hours when I should be sleeping!
We visited Longwood Gardens, an amazing place. We didn't even shoot that many flowers... we were too busy laughing and shooting each other. But there will be flowers to show soon enough.

Here are a few of the latest images I have been working on. I have been spending time down by the water now that spring is somewhat here (still too cold for my bones though)... my maternity shoot to follow!

I seldom get the chance to photograph children over the age of 4 or 5 ... babies and toddles are the norm for me and I have had a vision for a girl of 8 or 9 walking in the woods on a beautiful day for several months. I have literally dreaming of this scene, and my dreams are always in a warm yellow light with golden grass. The girl has long flowing hair and a quick smile. My dream, literally, came true. This week I have been staying with friends in MA because I have a trip planned to Pennsylvania and I had shoots scheduled here in MA. It was just easier than commuting to Maine. But its been great because I have REALLY been able to connect with the most important women (other than my mom and sister) in my life and spend some serious quality time.
Jen and Julia have been my amazing best friends since the tender age of 15. I met them when I was the new kid in high school and in a very very vulnerable state! Jen and Julia embraced me and we were fast friends! Here it is, 20 years later and we still confide in each other, help each other when we can, and bounce ideas for work and business when we need it. They are an ear, a sounding board, a place to stay... and my sisters. Julia had surgery last week on her wrist and needed a helping hand around the house... and I was more than happy to oblige. We had so much fun, we shot and shot and shot. I was able to get priceless shots of her and her beautiful 8 year old daughter Sage. Sage became the girl in my dreams ... when she starting walking down the path in the woods my heart literally skipped a beat when I saw through the lens what I had been seeing in my dreams.
These images are the result of that day. I hope I captured the spirit of this beautiful girl... her curiosity, her love for nature and the wild (she wants to save the african elephant) and her sprite like personality. I adore her and she is exactly the daughter I knew Julia would have.
I am so proud of both my friends... they are such wonderful moms. Sometimes I feel so much older because they have much younger children than me. But I had Thomas when I did for a reason and I think part of it was to be the sage that they will need as their children grow... and they keep me young :)

oh my goodness I am slacking! I have been shooting but not blogging like a good blogger should! I have been busy editing and helping my mom move. I also pinched a nasty nerve in my back and it's made typing very difficult... I can barely click a mouse :)
I met one sweet 7 week old this week as well as his 3 year old brother. I couldn't get the 2 of them together but mom and I are not giving up! It will happen one of these days. I have been lucky enough to be bestowed as the family photographer for Lannon and Worden family yay!

wednesday weddings are the best!

Yesterday I shot the first wedding of the season :) and since Andrew is in London I was on my own. It was only the bride and groom so I was sure I could handle it :P I'm kidding, I shoot alone all the time.
Allison and Mark were simply wonderful. They are from Virginia and wanted a very very simple destination wedding... just the 2 of them here in Maine at the Captain Lord Mansion in Kennebunkport. It was a GORGEOUS February day... we couldn't have asked for better weather! Since it was just the bride and groom (and me, I was even a witness!) we were able to take the time to get some great images. They were such troopers letting me drag them all the over the place! We even hit the beach at sunset and as you can see for yourself, the beach in February is just as gorgeous as it is in the summer... just a little cooler but with NO people. Allison stayed warm with a beautiful white velvet cape (it was lined with flannel :).
Mark is in the Navy and looked so handsome in his dress blues. I feel so lucky that they picked me to shoot for them! I was also honored to be the witness. What a great day... I couldn't have asked for better! Thanks Allison and Mark for kicking off what hopes to be an incredible season!

I can't wait... I know it's coming. This morning I woke up to sunshine beaming in my eyes and the sound of birds chirping (and other than those loud sea gulls I haven't heard many birds lately)... it was almost 40 today :)
Tomorrow I have the first wedding of the season... yes on a Wednesday! I'm excited, its just the bride and groom ... and well.. me. I'm actually the witness ! We are doing a hair and makeup and then a little shoot with just the bride and then the bride and groom together. He's a Navy man and will be wearing his dress blues. The ceremony will be a quiet just the two of them next to the fire place in the parlor of the mansion. I feel so fortunate to be a witness to this wonderful day, even better I get to document it!

It seems like everywhere I turn lately there has been some form of miscommunication or plans falling apart. First my best friend since high school, then my mother... and from what I hear from others around me... it seems to be a common theme. It's important to keep the doors open so we always know what is going on with the ones we love, whether it be your husband, fiance or your mother. At first I was the crazy one, and it was just me. But I am relieved to know that it's happening all over. I'm not saying I am glad that the rest of my friends are experiencing the same thing because miscommunication is never fun... but it's good to know I'm not losing my marbles!

I think the lesson to be learned from the past week is that we need to patient with each other and understanding. Try to see the other person's point of view before we rush to judgment. Ask yourself, is it me? Then make the necessary adjustments :) But sometimes it is necessary to simply close door but leave it open a crack... and take a break. Don't let things get so heated that there is no turning back... and talk about it! Maybe I am not the best person to give advice, lord knows I am no expert! But I want my future relationships to work, even if it's hard sometimes. So I will approach this next week ahead with caution and careful consideration to others but remembering to take care of me. Because when it comes right down to it, at the end of the day... that's the person you have to make happy.

knitting catch up

I have always said that if I could shoot a knitting or yarn book I would be in heaven. Yarn makes me happy. I love choosing the colors and the texture. Being in the yarn section of a craft shop relaxes me. I will actually go there sometimes, it's almost a Zen like calm that comes over me. Shopping for the yarn actually relaxes me more than the actually knitting itself. I have never been one for retail therapy actually... I'm more of a buy and return because of the guilt kinda girl. So today I decided to catch up on all my unfinished projects. I had been promising my mom a pair of fingerless mitts for over a week... one of my Etsy sales didn't make it to its destination so I had to reknit another pair. I start scarves all the time and they often sit hanging on the needles for weeks before I finish. Today I tied up all the loose ends, well almost all. I have a blanket that I start LAST JUNE and still haven't completed. There's no deadline for the blanket of course :P
So here's to staying warm with a ball of yarn and shiny needles... and completing projects on time!

I started and finished our new wedding site this weekend. I have a HUGE cramp in my hand to prove it!
I hope the site shows our wedding work in a pleasing and fun way. The design was easy, the code... not so much. Andrew is the code master but he is swamped with projects and freelance work in the UK. May can't come fast enough!

So I'm browsing through my flickr contacts yesterday and I see this gorgeous lady in a hat, scarf and what look like my fingerless mitt design! I said to myself (or maybe out loud I don't remember...) "those look like mine!" And then I felt pretty stupid because I realized it was my lovely friend Michelle Yeager who in fact special ordered the whole set. It was so cool to see her all decked out in her custom made goods. She told me to make whatever I want and I am soooo glad I went with green because she looks amazing! Thomas surprised me... actually he does that a lot. Sometimes it's just something he says, a simple adult like phrase or a dry joke. He does have a very dry sense of humor. He hates being photographed... for the most part. Today he told me he had an idea for a shot. First of all I love that he has "ideas" for shots, second I am psyched that he wants to be the subject of the shot! He's a creative boy with tons of ideas for movies and stories... some of which he puts to paper.
Today he had a white shirt and tie idea. I think it's what he was thinking... I hope I was able bring his vision to light.

Today I had the wonderful pleasure of doing head shots for 2 fabulous fellow female business owners. We belong to the same networking group and to keep away the winter blues I offered a shoot to those in the group (a good way to network and a good way to meet some local people!.
Audrey and Courtney own Azalea Events, a Portland based event planning company. They cover everything for weddings to corporate events. Sweet ladies and pretty faces! Recently I was asked by my best friend of 20 years, and fellow photographer Jen to do a Boudoir shoot as a Valentine's gift for her husband. Jen is a mother of a sweet sweet little boy and always on the go. Like all mom's she gets tired and run down but she takes good care of herself, eats organically, and uses natural products when she can.
Well on the day of the shoot Jen certainly looked better than she did in high school! I like to say that we all got better looking as we got older. As a matter of fact the other hottie in my boudoir portfolio is the 3rd member of our group Julia. Just more evidence that when we roll into our 30's we become more confident and self assured... and as you can see in these images, more sexy!
I think boudoir is incredibly gratifying. What it does for the self esteem (no matter who you are!) is priceless. Jen is not a model, none of my boudoir clients are models... just women who want to feel good. We can look back on these images in 20 years and smile :) Not to mention the smile it puts on your sweetie's face!!! And YES her husband was very very proud!

I had the pleasure of shooting with this lovely model Meg Sayles. We are working on getting Meg's professional modeling portfolio together. She wears EVERYTHING well and has amazing bone structure. She was so easy to work with!

A great day to start a blog, even if my love is across the pond :(
Welcome to the Sea Glass Blog. We are very happy that you stopped by and are checking in on what we are up to. I am here in New England braving the V Day storm on my own, I'm being brave... really I am. It's blowing around out there but its not too bad ... yet. The waves are huge and I may have to get out there and shoot!

Last weekend I had a little bit of a shooting marathon. I did 2 shoots in one day and anyone knows, that can be a challenge... especially if one of them is of 2 little boys! But these 2 were awesome. Evan and Ethan were just the coolest kids in front of the camera, they loved seeing their images right away on the screen :P Who doesn't?!
Then I met up with a model from Boston, Meg Sayles (which I will post later today).
Here are a couple of my faves from the boys... they were in character the entire time. Thanks Ethan and Evan for a great shoot!
